at the same time, I remember with regret the people and events of which I have no physical image. Either because I was too shy or because I didn't have a camera with me. for example, my visit to john berger in quincy-mieussy, whose thoughts and writings mean so much to me, or to arnold esch in trastervere and karl schlögel in wilmersdorf, whose eye for detail and whose connections to us in their writing about the roman and eastern european worlds seem akin to my photographic eye. even not having a single decent picture of long-time friends like michael köhler in schwabing still hurts me more than 20 years after his untimely death. and there are many more omissions...
